Tuesday, February 5, 2008Oh YES, Wyoming! Oh YES, I'm going...

Wednesday, we leave for the Great Square state to the north. No, not Colorado. Not Kansas either. The other one.

This week Kenna & I will be leading worship for college students in Wyoming. I'm bringing all my equipment, including the loopers. I think I have more guitar equipment than clothes... This will be the first time I've gotten to use my new guitar with the loop stations. I hope all goes well...

Anna is staying with Nana this whole week. If you think about it, pray for her. She's never been apart from us for that long. Pray for Nana & Papa too - they're old and might be much older by the time we get back.

We're pretty excited. It'll be a fun trip and I always enjoy getting to lead worship. I'll try to take a few snapshots along the way. Maybe we can get those up on the web before 2009 rolls around...

Saturday, March 31, 2007Warm Pockets of Cool

Sometimes, during the day, I run into what I call a Pocket of Cool ™. It can be almost any event: an awesome seat at a busy fast food restaurant, no one in the acoustic guitar room at Guitar Center, the VIP discount at Rosa's when I didn't ask for it. All these things have the unexpected aroma of coolness. Usually, though, these Pockets of Cool ™ consist of music.

It's one thing to hear songs you like or haven't heard in awhile over your iPod, but in The Wild, it's something special.

Last Saturday, Anna & I went to Lowe's together. We played pretty hard. We checked out the showers, played hide & seek in the front doors, and checked every drawer in the demo kitchens. On the back aisles, where there's more space and there aren't many people, we could really crank up the speed on the 'ole basket. When you get to a certain speed, everything on the basket picks up a low hum. Anna was really digging it.

As we sped down the lumber aisles, the 2x4's a blur, I heard a familiar phrase over the in-store speaker system. That's right; When the Stars Go Blue by Ryan Adams. It got better. Right after that came Where the Streets Have No Name and then Remedy by Jason Mraz.

You know, most of the time I have my own soundtrack to life running in my head. It's awesome, but every once and awhile, reality has it beat.

Monday, February 12, 2007Circle of Friends With a Hole In The Middle

Sunday morning, before Sunday school, Kenna, Anna, & I stopped off to get donuts. We go to this little place on 34th street. We know the lady behind the counter pretty well, as well as a lot of the regular customers. We used to go almost every Saturday and sometimes Anna & I would go before school while I was working at the Fortress. It's kind of like Cheers, but with donuts instead of beer.

Yesterday morning, we walked in and got in line behind Sally Charles, the wife of a guy I work with. As if that wasn't strange enough, Liz (the woman behind the counter) told us Coy said hi. Coy is the husband of our children's minister at Highland and a former Sunday school teacher of mine. It was like this strange little reunion where everyone knew someone, but not everyone...except us.

Sally & her son, Nathan left and we ordered donuts. We sat for 15 minutes or so, visiting with older people who don't have proper names in our heads. We call them things like The Two Old Farmers in Trucker Hats and The Older, Nosy Hispanic Couple That Ask Us Far Too Many Questions. It might be easier just to learn their names...

A lot of our life is like that. We spend a good portion of our time out in public just visiting with strangers. Sometimes we pray for them as we leave, or maybe later at home, but it seems very temporal. They don't take up residence in our hearts & minds for long...I'm not sure how I feel about that...
